If you frequently stop by this blog, you know that I was named the National Jamboree-on-the-Air organizer for the USA in late 2010. From there I formed a committee of committed Scouting leaders from around the country who have supported JOTA over the years. From our first meeting they made some excellent suggestions about how best to take the current Boy Scout JOTA information and put it on steroids! Well that work has finally come together.

This site has downloadable promotion fact sheets for Scout Leaders and a separate fact sheet for Radio Amateurs. These are provided in both color and black & white versions for easy printing no matter what equipment you have. It provides lots of resources for both these audiences and suggests ways to get in contact to work with one another in support of the event in October 2011. The planning and operational resources are also extensive, including success stories from previous JOTA events.

I am a girl scout leader in Kentucky. My husband (ke4aer) and I hosted my brownie troop for JOTA last year. All the girls enjoyed it greatly, as did we. We plan to do it again this year. I have seen many places on the internet, and this months QST even mentions, the effort to get girl scouts involved in this activity, just as the boy scouts have been for years. I applaud this effort. I do, however, have one suggestion…..a girl scout patch. The only patches I’ve seen anywhere are specifically boy scout patches, just as the one above. A patch for the girls would certainly add to the enjoyment of JOTA for them. I would like to be able to grow our JOTA event into an area event, rather than just my troop and having a fun patch to offer would certainly make this more inviting.

I certainly agree that a patch would help increase interest in JOTA among Girl Scouts. My involvement as JOTA Organizer is with the Boy Scouts, which also includes our co-ed Venturing program. I recommend inquiring with the Girl Scouts. I did find a link that shows a Girl Scouts Ham Radio patch. I also found the link to the original ARRL story at Girl Scout Patch That at least shows that others have been interested. I also saw the article in the September QST and complimented the author, Debra Johnson K1DMJ, on getting this information out. She told me that she’d received a number of favorable comments.
