I’ve made it to the cover of the ARRL National Contest Journal! A big shout out and thank you to Scott Wright, KØMD, the current NCJ Editor. Perhaps this is a final defiant gesture of Scott’s as he completes his three years serving as editor. Or, more likely, scraping the bottom of the editorial barrel for something, anything, to fill the journal’s page count.
Actually, all VHF contesters need to thank Scott a great deal for his efforts over those three years for bringing VHF contesting coverage to the journal. He’s had some superb articles on roving and on VHF contesting in general. Plus, I’ve always found most of the articles provide insight into how I can improve my efforts whether they are HF or VHF.
I’ve had the good fortune of having three articles published in NCJ in 2020.
- K5ND’s VHF Limited Rover Experience. January/February 2020.
- Magic Band, Magic Contesting. May/June 2020.
- An In-Depth Look at the K5ND VHF Rover Setup — Part 2. November/December 2020.

This latest article goes into the details of my current rover setup with roof-top rotator assembly, the back seat operating position, hardware, software, and many other aspects.
If you’ve been keeping up with my blog here, you’ve probably already seen most of this information. But even if you’ve seen much of it already, this article brings it all together.
I encourage you to check out the full range of articles in the National Contest Journal. It’s free to ARRL members and can be found at https://ncjweb.com
