Every once in a while I get an inquiry about how I’ve done something on my website. Typically, it can be attributed to a built-in WordPress element or a WordPress plug-in. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with my programming skills.
More recently the inquiries have been about how the home page was built. This is, as you would expect, not about my skills but about a WordPress theme that serves to set the style for the entire website.
I began on WordPress in 2010, when I moved from Apple’s iWeb. I found a reasonable theme on Envato Market’s Theme Forest and started to work on the site. Almost all that content is still on this website.
In 2011 the site moved to an iThemes WordPress theme, which I also used for my church’s website. Right now I’m still running their themes for the websites I manage for the K2BSA Amateur Radio Association, the World JOTA-JOTI Team, Concordia Lutheran Church, and my writing business PathForeWord.
For K5ND, about a year ago, I found the Newspaper theme, also on Theme Forest, and went to work rebuilding the website to take advantage of its features. It is a very powerful theme and, as a result, requires a fair bit of time working through the documentation and trying things out.
I’ll also note that they are frequently improving the theme with updates every couple of months. That’s how you know you’ve got a top notch theme. That’s also why I started looking outside the iThemes realm, since they’ve stopped updating and creating new themes. Their business just moved in a different direction.
So that’s the story about my website’s updated look. I’ve also included below a few images from the various design changes this website has seen over the past eight years.
