I had great fun in mid-March with a trip to Overland Park, Kansas, and to Holdrege, Nebraska. I was able to activate EM28 in Overland Park and get my grandkids operating on satellites. In Holdrege I met up with my long time buddy, Bob, WB0MNW, and activated EN00 in Nebraska.
EM28 Overland Park Kansas
We were visiting my daughter Kyla’s family — three grandkids and a dog. Bennett got on the air and worked W5NM via CAS-4B on cross mode SSB to CW no less. Then Avery got on the next CAS-4B pass and worked KB6LTY. See the video of her first QSO. She also worked K8YSE/7 and W5NM.
Over five satellite passes from EM28 I made 12 QSOs. Plus, perhaps I sparked some interest from my grandkids.
EN00 Holdrege Nebraska
The next time I got on satellites, we had traveled to Holdrege to meet Bob, WB0MNW, drink some beer, eat good food, and work satellites. We found a parking lot and managed to work 23 stations on four satellite passes.
Also during this trip I spent two days with my brother-in-law Larry reviewing the test questions for the Technician License Exam. He’d been studying but needed some tutoring and perhaps motivation/inspiration. We went through the full slide deck from the ARRL Instructor’s materials. He’ll be taking his test in about a week.
Overall, we had fun handing out a few new grids, introducing amateur radio, plus getting outdoors and seeing new country.
